2000: Chine only produced 0.5 million t
2010: Chinese production increased to 11 million t
2021: China & Indonesia together produced 38 million t

Tsingshan is the new giant with a production volume of around 11 mt in 2021. They have invented a new process to melt stainless steel with NPI (nickel pig iron) from Indonesia.

Tsingshan set up a plant in Indonesia, close to their Ni mines, that has by far the lowest production costs for 304 and 316 grade slabs & billets.

The share of China & Indonesia will grow to more than 70 % by 2025.

Protectionism is already in place today (92 % of all STS markets have some measurements in place). This has not stopped expansion of ChIndonesia so far.

The introduction of border adjustment mechanisms like discussed in the EU at the moment, could increase the prices for stainless steel coming from China and Indonesia in the future.
